New to the Finance Industry? No Problem

When I started at AFM three years ago, I admittedly didn’t know much about financial planning or the finance industry in general. There was a bit of a learning curve for me as I was introduced to many different terms and ideas. Rather than constantly asking my new colleagues what everything meant, I took it upon myself to find the information on my own and learned quite a bit in doing so. I thought it might be helpful to share a few different sources I used in case anyone else is in the same boat I was!

  1. INVESTOPEDIA

I actually have this saved as a bookmark on my internet browser for easy access. This site contains articles and analysis, but what I find it helpful for is looking up financial terms. There is a search bar at the top where you can type in any term you don’t understand and it provides definitions and examples of whatever you don’t understand. Immensely helpful!

  1. BETTERINVESTING

I was introduced to this publication through our founder and chairman, Alex Armstrong, who writes a monthly article for them. Perhaps I’m biased, but her articles in particular are of great interest to someone just starting out in the industry or someone who is looking to start their financial planning journey. She has written articles on financial aid eligibility, basics of 529 plans, and selecting trustees for your estate. There are other articles in the magazine of interest as well. Just this month, someone wrote a piece on antiques (“Antiques: It’s a Buyer’s Market for Furniture Built to Last” October, 2019). It’s worthwhile to search their website as there are many informative articles on all kinds of topics.

  1. YAHOO FINANCE

Similar to Investopedia, you can use this site to search definitions of terms and financial products. It’s very user friendly and easy to navigate. I also use it to search historical prices of stocks and mutual funds, both for my personal investments and those of our clients.

  1. INVESTMENTNEWS

This is a great website and magazine that produces articles on investing, advisors, and anything financial related. I’ll peruse the website when I want to keep up to date with what’s going on in the industry. Lots of different articles and videos on interesting topics.
